Yesterday we witnessed something very special.
We executed the last official round of Perth United at Revolver Sound Studio with the below personnel:
Jaime Page from Jaime Page Dark Universe on Guitar
Scotty Max from Street Creatüre on Drums
Sal Abate from Hair Metal Heaven on Vocals
STUBACCA on bass
And introducing Ryan Pearce, representing Savage Studios from Bunbury as recording engineer.
We have seen so much talent come through the previous rounds, but yesterday was musicianship on a level completely unparalleled to anything I have ever seen before.
Allow me to elaborate as I am still in awe (some would call it denial, haha) to what happened.
The day started as usual around the 8am and ideas were thrown around for a few hours and the guys started jamming.
Nothing new under the sun there. This happens every round. Keep reading…
Jacob Kenny, Ryan and myself did a lunch run to feed the rock stars while they were getting the last arrangement parts locked in and we all had a lunch together around 12:30 before starting tracking.
Again - all pretty benchmark compared to the last rounds. But then the magic began…
Scotty did a one take of the songs on drums to a click - and then decided to do another one for good luck… So drums were tracked in about 10 minutes. Uhm... yes!
Then we fiddled with the bass tone and put Stu in the room with his spunky sounding bass (he had bought fresh strings for the occasion). The feel of the room and the response from the amp was such a pump to him that he laid the song down in one take… so approx 4 minutes to record bass. I mean, COME ON MAN!?
Ok, Guitars and Vocals are usually multi layers and multi takes, so we got Jaime set up in the room the same way so she could feel the amp and the roar from the amp.
I don’t think there was any takes we didn’t use… 3 full playthroughs, solos and harmonies… in the closet! Think guitar took less than an hour - with most of the time being spent on listening back to make sure that there wasn’t anything that needed rectification! Absolutely NUTS!!!
Now… it’s important to realise that these guys did NOT know who they were doing a song with.
They did NOT have a song written and rehearsed until noon and Sal had to come up with the lyrics and melody after listening to a recording from the morning session in his car for about an hour and a half!
So to see a singer walk in and do 2x clean takes - start to finish - in perfect pitch is seriously astounding! But it doesn’t stop here, folks! We created all harmonies on the spot and besides a few phrasing lengths, all harmonies and dubs were first takes as well - and this is not a basic vocal line!
The amount of times we would sit in the control room and laugh out loud in sheer excitement was never ending - it was basically a first take song!!!
So when I tell you I am still “in shock”, I mean it, haha! The musicianship yesterday was one thing, but the chemistry between these 4 legends were inspiring and the display of talent and musicianship we witnessed is something I will treasure forever!
And also a HUGE shoutout to Ryan Pearce who got thrown in on the deep end, capturing the band in a studio he has never worked in before, using mics he picked as we were setting up and using a desk he had never used before.
I can’t begin to imagine the pressure that would have caused as there is literally no room for error when you’re working on such a tight schedule.
And another big shoutout to Vic Manfrin (owner of Revoler) for coming down twice to lend Ryan a hand and for letting us use the studio for the last 4 rounds!
Everything about that day was just magic - and I got to experience it all first hand, for the first (and last time) in the last 10 months, and for that I am so grateful!
Perth United has been an incredible journey. We have all made many friends for life and created 10 songs that will forever represent a snippet of the Perth rock scene 2021/2022.
But there is one last shot left in the barrel. Stay tuned for the Grand Finale announcement next month…
Until then… To hear this song and Round #8, share this post, share the songs and ask your friends, fans, followers, family and foes to support us via the link below:
